If you really want to get into the underbelly of some awesome SEO techniques, especially link building, I would read the link building section of Stuntdubl's SEO Playbook - and make sure you read every article he's linked to regarding link building:

Another reliable resource is SEOmoz.org. They have a link building book for sale and they are extremely reliable and informative. (I haven't purchased it yet. I intend to within the next few days!)
